Mr. Varma is an industry recognized leader with diversified engineering and management skills in the engineering, procurement and construction industry with over 40 years of experience in domestic and international Process, Power and Industrial business,  and a successful track record in global capital project execution worth multibillion USD in installed cost. Mr. Varma’s core skills include leadership, entrepreneurship, turnkey project management, financial (P&L) responsibility, contract negotiations, strategic planning, global business development, quality management and relationship building.

As a Project Director with Reliance industries, Mr. Varma managed, from inception to start-up, world’s largest Refinery off gas cracker complex, a grass roots facility involving over $7 billion of capital investment. The complex was started up in June 2017 and has achieved full production. As the Ethylene Business Unit Senior Vice President and Project Director with Shaw Stone & Webster, Mr. Varma successfully pursued, negotiated, and managed several domestic and international mega projects with teams consisting of hundreds of professionals in multiple offices across the globe and thousands of construction workers on site. As the Director of Engineering for Stone & Webster Worldwide Process Business Sector, Mr. Varma implemented several quality and efficiency improvement initiatives. He also helped standardized work process in all offices across the globe. Mr. Varma additionally formulated a strategic plan for the power and process business in Stone & Webster’s Toronto office, which led to major project awards and over $3 billion in installed costs. He also led strategic plan development for Stone & Webster’s Houston office. In this office, he also led a quality improvement team to reengineer project execution systems for Stone & Webster’s process business sector. The initiative resulted in ISO 9001 certification of the Houston office in the first attempt and in record time.

Mr. Varma developed an innovative concept of offering pre-engineered ethylene plants to clients worldwide after the Asian economic crises in 1998 which led to cancellation of a fully engineered project in Indonesia. Led the marketing initiative and successfully negotiated the sale of the Indonesian ethylene plant to BASF and YPC in China.

Mr. Varma has received several awards from Gulf Farabi, Saudi Arabia, ExxonMobil, SNC Lavalin, Singapore Government and Reliance Industries for achieving outstanding safety performance at project construction sites.
